Jim Tanner is a member of the National Police Accountability Project (NPAP). NPAP is a project of the National Lawyers Guild, which was founded in 1937 as the first racially integrated national bar association. The central mission of NPAP is to promote the accountability of law enforcement officers and their employers for violations of the Constitution and the laws of the United States.
With over 500 members and growing, we continue to effect change in the flawed legal system and fight to put an end to police brutality of all forms. NPAP does not provide legal representation to victims of law enforcement misconduct. Jail Abuse and Medical Neglect LawyerJails and prisons should conduct a careful medical and mental health screening as soon as reasonably possible after an inmate is admitted.
These screenings are necessary to identify inmates who might require medical treatment. They also serve to protect other incoming inmates and others in the prison from communicable diseases and other serious medical conditions. The intake nurse as well as any other medical staff should take all vital signs. Check for any diagnosis in the past if history is available to include medical conditions such as high blood or other pre-existing medical conditions. If such conditions exist the inmate should be checked regularly. Once a Florida citizen is taken into police custody, the police department and the jail assume responsibility for that person’s safety. If an inmate is injured or dies because of medical neglect, abusive treatment, or negligence, then the city or county may be financially liable. Jails present many dangers and pretrial inmates have little recourse to complain. Civil rights attorney Jim Tanner has had good success for victims of jail medical neglect, including awards to family members of those who died in custody. Attorney Tanner practices in the Tampa Bay Area, including Polk, Pinellas, Pasco, Hernando, Manatee, Sarasota and throughout the state of Florida Attorney Tanner has handled and helped many other attorneys handle all civil rights lawsuits and wrongful death cases stemming from police brutality, misconduct and incarceration:
